Day 47 - The great Lake Ontario appears !!!

         First sighting of Lake Ontario
August 12
We left camp today without Bob as he had mechanical trouble yesterday and had to get his bike to a bike store to be able to continue, we headed south through farm land again and many small lovely villages arriving in Newcastle for breakfast at a restaurant Ed knew, he was our tour guide today as he frequents this part of the country.
Finally the third great lake made an appearance as we left town " Lake Ontario", at pretty harbor and small beach inhabited by ducks and canadian geese. As we traveled along it’s shore we noticed a difference from the other lakes , a gentleness was evident as the fertile land blended itself right to the water edge with the lake , no rocks and jagged cliffs here. And the farms now were not real farms but more like hobby farms , immaculate houses and grounds but the barns were not in use , many large cottage stile houses also doted the lakeshore.
Port Hope was a pleasant surprise , a town not affected by development , a town that has managed to keep it’s character , many old buildings still stand , trees everywhere and the new is not overpowering the old but blends in , it was a pleasure to visit and I’ll have to come back one day with Evelyn.
Then Cobourg was next and again Ed took us around and we went to see the Town Hall  an amazing building built in a time that upper and lower Canada were merging and towns were bidding for capital status , we got a tour of the interior even though we missed the official one, as we told them we were going across the country and would not be able to come back tomorrow , the girl was very nice !!! and the tour well worth taking ( once again another place for a return visit !!! )
After that we lingered on the scenic shores of the lake , orchards , victorian houses , corn fields , monarch butterflies , swans, pretty little towns and beaches kept our attention and cameras busy , so much so that we were late into camp and dinner had just been served. But we managed to eat and get our tents up , I am writing this now before my shower as I don’t want it to get dark and then not be able to consult the notes .
The weather was wonderful , overcast and cool for the morning ( 22 degrees ) then sunny and a bit humid for the afternoon with the temperature up into the 30s. The last bart of the ride was against a good head wind but we were not rushing so it was not a very bad hindrance .
Today was an excellent day a day that illustrates that the journey and not the destination is what is of value on this trip , taking time to smell the roses is what’s it all about !!!
