August 1
Left the park last today as we had to make breakfast , it was a french toast morning . Brigitte , Janace, Ed and I ended up being the sweeps today and spent the day cycling together , just as well as the head wind we had made it a challenging day and as the winds picked up we were able to form a pace line to help assist in the progress home.
First stop of the day was was the town of White River the home of the bear that inspired the Winnie The Pooh series , we all got our picture taken under the statue, and got a post card for Max, I’ve been sending him one every few days so he can see my progress across the country. The route today was a bit easier with not so many climbs , we were further inland from the great Lake Superior so the country side today was doted with small picturesque lakes instead and lots of beaver ponds . Clouds rolled by all day and I thought we might get rained on but just when it looked like it was eminent it cleared up !! The head wind was strong and with us all day and it constantly swirled coming at you from different directions add to that the heavy truck traffic today and it made for a challenging ride as one was being pulled and pushed by air currents all day.
Along the way we kept catching up to other riders so we would stopped to let them get ahead and ended up eating at some interesting little places. Ever since coming into Ontario I’ve been on the hunt for a moose picture, every few kilometers there is the yellow sign on the side of the road warning motorist to watch for moose on the road so there must be some around , I have been getting a lot of kidding on my lack of success in spotting one by my fellow ridders , so today I was presented with my very own moose who now will accompany me for the rest of the journey , no name for it as of yet .
Camp today is not a camp but a Motel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , we are having our rest day here in Wawa and have actual rooms !! with there own bathrooms !!!! ( no line up for showers !!! ) there is even a TV !!!!! and a coffee maker, I don’t know if I even remember how to operate all that stuff !!!. And it gets better, I actually have two queen size beds in my room !!!, I think I will sleep in one tonight and the other tomorrow night !!
For dinner we had a treat also as it is the Swiss national day so , Serge and Pierre-Alain our Swiss contingent made Rosti and there was enough for thirds !!!, so we eat our fill and then there was a great fruit salad and ice cream for desert , when it was all over the two sang us the national anthem plus there local anthem and a couple of more songs just for the hell of it , a great time was had by all . After a bunch of us finished the evening at the local Tim Horton’s, joking around and reliving our escapades of the last few days and as always talking about the next ridding day as much has been said about the hills between here and Sault Saint Marie , especially the dreaded Montreal River hill , and as always the consensus is well it’s there and we’ll just have to climb it so no sense worrying too much about it.
Total ridden today : 132.2 - Average speed : 21.7 - Ridding time: 6.04
Arriving at one of our many stops we found Beth, Stephanie & Rhiannon relaxing after ice cream
Wawa, means wild goose in Ojibway , so there are three giant statues of them in town, this on as you come into town.
