20 July
Days out here are kind of blending into each other, today was another 140 km run, mainly flat , I don’t want to say boring but I’d say it was just a ridding day as opposed to a sight seeing day.
It started out great , the mist on the lake as we slowly woke giving way to blue skies and warm sunshine, everyone was feeling good . We rode off on a good road to Neeppawa the home of canadian author Margaret Lawrence , he got there early and the democratic chose of the ridding group was to stop for coffee first then tour the house and cemetery ( it ended up being a good choice) I could not resist the western omelet even though I had eaten for breakfast cereal and pancakes , I am not sure what is going to happen once this trip is over and I stop cycling , some serious dieting will be in order !!!!!
We lingered a good bit the restaurant and then left to see the house arriving just as the caretakers were driving down the street , so they waved us down and told us they would open if we waited a couple of minutes , therefore the early breakfast stop got us the tour of the house which was very pleasant , I ended up buying one of her books , a hard cover copy of “ The Stone Angel ” After that we went to the cemetery were the statue of the Stone Angel is located, the cemetery is immaculately keep with petunias on all the graves except for Margaret’s because she actually did not like petunias. the town of Neepawa is a busy little place nicely treed with some well kept historical buildings.
After the visit we just basically rode the rest of the way to camp with out anymore sight seeing , it was hot 30+ and our friendly tailwind was not pushing to much today , so it was a long day and we were glad to get in to Portage la Prairie and see the truck and the cooking crew hard at work .
Of note today was another fall by one of us on the road , poor John got distracted for a split second and went off the pavement onto the gravel and lost control and fell , luckily just some minor scratches to elbow and ankle and he rode on.
Total ridden today: 140.4 - Average speed : 25.7 - Ridding time : 5.27
Hard to believe that they once covered the prairies and now are only found occasionally in small fields as reminders of what was .
