July 19
So we woke to a foggy morning, with the time change I was up at 6 instead of my usual 5 AM, so I had to scramble a bit to get ready. But still got everything done and packed up and was on the road in good time.
The fog was not so thick as to be dangerous but thick enough so you could not see the road disappear into the horizon as usual, so it was a nice break !!, by mid morning it had lifted and we were back to prairie scenery which was changing again , it started looking more like farm land , a lot more cows and grass lands and marshes full of water because of all the rains , one area was so flooded that there was a sign saying “ The Manitoba Government has flooded our lands “ not sure what it was all about but there was a big lake were obviously there had been farm land.
Cycling was easy today , at first with NO wind but then our tail wind returned to push us on , amazing how ones average speed increases by about 10 km/h or more with the help of the wind.
We stopped in the little town of Birtle overwhelming the local coffee once again , the poor proprietor was by him self and there was about fifteen of us in there and just no way for him to serve us all , so some of the locals that had just gone in for a quiet coffee started to pitch in serving us coffee, very friendly people here in the prairies !!!
We were warned about bad road but so far they have been fine , a bit rough but OK.
Of note today was a large flock of pelicans we spotted flying overhead circling to gain altitude , when finally they were high enough the despaired.
We are now camped in Minnedosa a very busy town compared to a lot we have been through , we are on the shore of the lake and its sunny and warm , we were well feed rice pilaf and peach cobbler for desert , now a fire is being lit and people are conversing and relaxing
Total ridden today: 135.7 - Average speed: 24.6 - Riding time: 5.30
Black Turns are constantly attacking us as we pass wet lands along the way, they swoop down one after another until we clear the area.
